Az előadásban rövid és vázlatos áttekintést szeretnék adni annak a gondolatnak a történetéről (a nyugati hagyományban, 1277-ig), hogy a vallás hasznos fikció. Ez utóbbit az idők folyamán sokan készséggel elismerték, jellemzően mindenki más vallása vonatkozásában.
A filozófusokra különösen nagy hatással volt Arisztotelész, aki hűvös távolságtartással kezelte a “mesés és gyermeteg” narratívák filozófiai és politikai használatának kérdését, de nem foglalkozott különösebben a problémával. Hasonlóan nagy hatása volt a középkorban
Averroes-nek, mégpedig azért, mert tökéletesen félreértették. Ez a félreértés azonban hasznos fikciónak bizonyult a kérdést illető mélységes intellektuális szorongás kezelésére.</div>
