Hanneke Janssen Memorial Prize

In collaboration with the Nijmegen University Fund (SNUF), the undersigned intend to launch a prize in memory of Hanneke Janssen, who graduated at the Radboud University Nijmegen a month before she died in a traffic accident on November 11th, 2008.

Mark of honour
This prize intends to honour Hanneke’s personality and work: her social engagement – which, among others, expressed itself in her preparing a weekly meal for the homeless in the centre of Nijmegen - as well as her inspiring work in the foundations of physics, notably as Managing Editor for the Studies in History and Philosophy of Modern Physics and as the author of the outstanding master’s thesis Reconstructing Reality on decoherence.

Prize for best Master’s thesis
In view of Hanneke’s last-mentioned achievement, it has been decided to award the prize - on a yearly basis - for the best master’s thesis throughout the world in the field of History and Philosophy of Modern Physics. A call for candidates, to be nominated by their scientific supervisors, will be issued on July 1, 2010. The formal stipulations for the prize are to be found at http://www.ru.nl/publish/pages/596229/hanneke_janssen_memorial_prize_-_stipulations_2010.pdf

The winner will receive the prestigious prize at Nijmegen, and will present the work recognized by the prize in lectures at Nijmegen and Utrecht. We aspire to award the prize for at least five consecutive years. The prize carries a monetary value of €1000.

Call for donations
In order to realize this prize, we appeal to you, friends and colleagues of Hanneke, to donate to the Hanneke Janssen Memorial Fund that forms the financial basis of the Hanneke Janssen Memorial Prize. This fund will be administered by the Radboud University Nijmegen through a special foundation (SNUF) and will eventually be held by a socially oriented bank Hanneke would have approved of (i.e., ASN).

Your donation may be transferred (asap, but preferably by June 30, 2010) into the bank account that is listed below, mentioning Hanneke Janssen Memorial Fund under payment details. Your donation will in its entirety be utilised for the Hanneke Janssen Memorial Prize and is likely to be tax-deductible.

Many thanks in advance, with kindest regards,

Jos Uffink (Utrecht)
Klaas Landsman (Nijmegen)
Michiel Seevinck (Nijmegen/Utrecht)
Christoph Lehner (Berlin)
