WG: [PhilPhys] job ad University of Berne

Dear Balazs, Gabor, Laszlo, and Miklos,

I talked to Gabor briefly about Bern when he arrived in Pittsburgh, but otherwise: sorry for not having given you any news. I knew about the job ad only about the same time that it was sent out (and not through an official channel of information). The ad means probably not bad news but it seems difficult to me to say how good it really is. Nobody from our HPS group was involved in drawing up the ad and we will probably have at best one person which will be involved in the selection of the candidates.

It is difficult to say what candidates the search committee will prefer, and I think it is very unfortunate that the ad does not mention any aspects of foundations and history of the sciences. The term "Wissenschaftsphilosophie" in German is much broader, I think, than "philosophy of science", which one would rather translate as "Wissenschaftstheorie". Also, the position will only be located at the Faculty of Humanities, not also in the Sciences as it was the case with Grasshoff, and the faculty has not committed itself to a full professorship ("ordentliche Professur"). It might become only an associate professorship ("ausserordentliche Professur").

I think the future of the program will very much depend on who they will hire and this is, to me, very unforseeable given the almost exclusive humanities background of the people which will be in the relevant committees. But I am glad that the job ad is sent around also on phil-phys lists and I hope that strong candidates will apply. So, in the end, I like to be optimistic about the whole issue and think that, with a strong new professorship, something like a complete HPS program might continue in Bern.

Die Universität Bern schreibt eine ordentliche oder
ausserordentliche

Professur für Philosophie
(Schwerpunkt Wissenschaftsphilosophie)

am Institut für Philosophie aus, die, je nach
Qualifikation und Erfahrung der BewerberInnen, besetzt wird.
Die Stelle kann frühestens zum 1. September 2012 an
getreten werden.

Die neue Stelleninhaberin bzw. der neue Stelleninhaber
sollte bereit und in der Lage sein, das Fach
Wissenschaftsphilosophie in Forschung und Lehre breit zu
vertreten. Erwartet werden ein Engagement für
innovative Konzeptionen in Forschung und Lehre. Gesucht wird
eine offene Persönlichkeit, die fähig ist, eine
wichtige Brückenfunktion zwischen Philosophie und
anderen Wissenschaften zu übernehmen und
Lehrveranstaltungen auch im Bereich der systematischen
theoretischen Philosophie (wie z.B. Erkenntnistheorie)
anzubieten.

Voraussetzung für die Anstellung ist eine Habilitation
oder der Nachweis einer gleichwertigen wissenschaftlichen
Qualifikation. Erwartet werden darüber hinaus
Erfahrung im Einwerben von Drittmitteln und die aktive
Beteiligung an der Umsetzung der Bologna-Deklaration,
insbesondere der dritten Stufe der Bologna-Reform.

Die Universität Bern strebt eine Erhöhung des
