Description: Abstract

The main problem in the foundation of quantum mechanics is usually thought to be the measurement problem and is illustrated by Schrödinger’s cat. But there is a deeper problem: what is the physical meaning of the wave function or the quantum state apart from being a tool for "predicting results of measurements"? 

I will first explain why this is not clear at all and why a naive statistical interpretation of the quantum state is untenable, because of the "no hidden variable theorems"; they show that "measurements" cannot possibly reveal pre-existing properties of the object being "measured" (hence the quotation marks). One also says that measurements are "contextual". Then I will explain why one can add to the quantum state "hidden variables", namely the positions of the particles, whose evolution is guided by the quantum state. This theory, first proposed by de Broglie in 1927 then completed by Bohm in 1952 and popularized by Bell:

-gives a physical meaning to the quantum state,
-is completely deterministic,
-reproduces the statistical predictions of quantum mechanics through natural assumptions on initial conditions,
-explains the contextual character of quantum "measurements" implied by the "no hidden variable theorems".
