Dear List Members,

On Wednesday October 5 Emilia Margoni (University of Florence, University
of Geneva) will give a talk at the Lisbon Philosophy of Physics Seminars
titled "*Can Bohmian ontology be a minimalist ontology**?*" (abstract
below).

These events are organized in the context of the activities of the LanCog
Research Group <https://cful.letras.ulisboa.pt/lancog/> at the Centre of
Philosophy of the University of Lisbon, and they will focus on the
foundations of quantum and spacetime physics.

The meeting will be held on Zoom (17:00-19:00 CEST). If you have not
registered yet, you can do so here

ABSTRACT:
Michael Esfeld’s minimalist ontology is committed to two axioms relating to
(1) distance relations that identify simple objects (permanent matter
points) while (2) the distances between them change. This presentation
scrutinizes such a conceptual strategy to find out whether it can
successfully be applied to all levels of physical reality, as Esfeld
contends. To do so, it explores one of his sources, that is, Bohmian
mechanics. Two arguments are proposed. First, while Bohm’s original
formulation of Bohmian mechanics and the interpretation advocated by Dürr,
Goldstein and Zanghì are typically taken as mathematically equivalent, I
argue that Esfeld’s minimalist ontology does not cover the former’s
ontological richness. Second, I more broadly question the tenability of
Esfeld’s metaphysical programme as conceiving physical reality in terms of
a set of propertyless, permanent, matter-points.

Best regards,

Andrea Oldofredi
