Dear List Members,

On Wednesday December 7 Juliusz Doboszewski (University of Bonn, Harvard
Black Hole Initiative) will give a talk at the Lisbon Philosophy of Physics
Seminars titled "*Observational indistinguishability (and black hole
spacetimes)*" (abstract below).

These events are organized in the context of the activities of the LanCog
Research Group <https://cful.letras.ulisboa.pt/lancog/> at the Centre of
Philosophy of the University of Lisbon, and they will focus on the
foundations of quantum and spacetime physics.

The meeting will be held on Zoom (17:00-19:00 CET). If you have not
registered yet, you can do so here
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1pe9-CUZwKFA_uS0j-wD7bRQatIO-SdzxBqKlmkM6XOY/edit?usp=drive_web>
.

You can address any question to Andrea Oldofredi (

ABSTRACT:
After reviewing state of the art concerning available notions of
observational indistinguishability, I will discuss three open questions.
First, are there other, alternative definitions, or do the available
notions fully exhaust the logical space? Second, are there underexplored
methods of constructing examples of observationally indistinguishable
spacetimes, in particular: to a black hole spacetime? It turns out that the
answer is positive; I will discuss some explicit examples. Third, what is
the significance of observationally indistinguishable spacetimes? Here I
will argue that in some contexts, such as black hole spacetimes, the most
natural interpretation (observationally indistinguishable spacetimes tell
us something about the limits of our knowledge) is not the most fortunate
one. This is joint work with Erik Curiel.

Best regards,

Andrea Oldofredi
