Job description

The development of quantum technologies is increasingly entering the phase in which laboratory research is translated into prototype technology and first applications. This professorship position is created for developing the ethics of quantum technologies. You will be offered the possibility to look beyond the initial perspective of hype and doom, and to take up the task of exploring the main ethical issues, and pathways to overcome them, that these technologies can bring when they become materialized as sensors, communication networks and computers, and are being integrated in existing sociotechnical systems. Think of the potential use cases of quantum technologies, the implications on global society including the digital divide, and policy alternatives to steer quantum technology for good.

Until 2028 you participate in Action Line 4 of the Dutch national Quantum Delta NL<https://quantumdelta.nl/societal-impact/> programme on quantum technology. In this programme you collaboratively explore the Ethical, Legal and Societal Aspects (ELSA) of quantum technologies together with research groups on law and science communication from the University of Amsterdam and Leiden University. And you contribute to projects with quantum technology researchers, companies, institutes and other stakeholders aimed at identifying the ELSA of specific quantum technology applications, and at singling out applications that contribute to society.

In addition to research you are engaged in:

- PhD candidate supervision

- Teaching and course development

- Research project development

- Management of research projects

You will be part of the Ethics/Philosophy of Technology department at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management, within the quantum ethics research group led by Dr Pieter Vermaas. Playing an active role in the scientific community, you will transfer knowledge and help strengthen our Faculty, Department and the quantum ethics research group. We are a dynamic/international team of one postdoc researcher and three PhD candidates. Ours is an open and friendly atmosphere and we and the Department will give you all the support, training and coaching you need to evolve and grow your career.

Requirements

You thrive on taking the lead in developing a new field of research, for which you have the ability to build relevant networks and attract funding. Leveraging your communication skills, you convince stakeholders of your research proposals, working closely with industrial partners and students and colleagues of various TU Delft and other Quantum Delta NL Faculties. In addition, you enjoy mentoring and interacting with students.

You also have:

- A PhD degree in a field relevant to the position.

- A minimum of five years of experience as a postdoc researcher or similar

- A portfolio of journal publications and projects that illustrate your theoretical and practical expertise.

- Proficiency in written and spoken English, willingness to learn Dutch.

- Experience and affection for teaching.

- A collaborative attitude
