Dear List Members,

The Call for Papers of the Special Issue "*On Time in the Foundations of
Physics*" is now open and will appear in the Journal for General Philosophy
of Science <https://www.springer.com/journal/10838>.

*Guest Editors*:
*Andrea Oldofredi*, University of Lisbon
*Cristian Lopez*, University of Lausanne

*Description:*
The concept of time is ubiquitous in physics as well as in metaphysics,
however, its inherent nature remains puzzling and elusive. Pick any
property traditionally ascribed to time and there will be a deep, long
standing debate around which philosophers have been gravitating.

Since the naturalist turn in the twentieth century metaphysics, there has
been a growing tendency to investigate the nature of time by looking into
physical theories for new insights and ideas. Within the framework of a
science-informed philosophy, empirical inputs have thus been mixed with
conceptual tools, fostering a fruitful collaboration between philosophers
and physicists. And even though some light has been shed on the nature of
time, new conceptual issues have also emerged. The aim of this collection -
based on the workshop β€œOn Time in the Foundations of Physics"
<https://cful.letras.ulisboa.pt/lancog/events/lisbon-lausanne-workshop-on-time-in-the-foundations-of-physics/>
-
is to show and discuss the fruits of the collaboration between physicists
and philosophers by delving into questions about the ontological status of
time as well as some of the novel problems that appeared in recent years in
connection with theories at the frontiers of physics, as for instance
quantum gravity.

The Special Issue of the Journal for General Philosophy of Science will
feature original contributions on topics such as (but not limited to):

- The (dis)appearance of time in quantum gravity;

- Time in cosmology and relativity;

- The nature and the role of time in quantum mechanics;

- Experimental results about time in foundations of physics;

- The direction of time;

- Metaphysical aspects of time in fundamental physics, thermodynamics and
statistical mechanics;

- Operational conceptions of time and their metaphysical implications.
