Utrecht University, founded in 1636, has developed into one of Europe's 
largest and most prominent institutes for research and education. The 
Faculty of Humanities, with nearly 7,000 students and nearly 900 staff 
members, offers an inspiring and dynamic working environment. Our 
research and education programmes focus on culture, history, arts, 
literature, media, language, philosophy and theology, covering the 
period from classical antiquity to the present day. We pay special 
attention to interdisciplinary and international collaboration, the use 
of new media, and high-quality teaching and research. The research 
programmes are organised in four institutes:

    * ZENO Research Institute for Philosophy,

position:

PhD-researcher Theoretical Philosophy (1,0 fte)


Job description:

We are looking for a researcher in either one of the following two
fields:

1.      application of formal methods in the philosophy of science 
(including logical and statistical methods);
2.      epistemology, preferably with an interest in scientific, 
mathematical, or formal knowledge.

The PhD student position is intended for doing research leading to a 
doctorate thesis. Apart from that, the position involves some teaching 
and management tasks, including help with applications for funding and 
with organizing workshops or conferences. For more information

Qualifications:

Applicants for the PhD student position should have a master's degree
or comparable, with excellent marks, in philosophy or in an area
related to the intended PhD project.

Knowledge of either a science or of formal methods is a plus. We are 
looking for a researcher who has good communicative skills and works in 
a self-motivated manner.

A very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written (preferably 
level C1 passive/ B2 active or better on the Common European Framework 
(CEF) Global Scale), is required

Terms of employment:

The PhD studentship will be for four years. Only after a positive 
evaluation if the candidate meets the requirements agreed upon in 
advance, will the employment be continued after the first year.

Salary PhD-researcher: EUR 2,000.- in the first year to EUR 2,558.- in 
the fourth year, gross per month on a full-time basis, based on the 
Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.

The Department strives to increase the number of women on the academic 
staff, and where candidates are equally qualified, preference will be 
given to women.

Employment for the position will begin at September 1, 2008, or soon
after.
