The CEU Department of Philosophy cordially invites you to a talk
(as part of its Departmental Colloquium series)
by
Ralph Walker (University of Oxford)
on
`Kant and Virtue Ethics`

Tuesday, 7 February, 2012, 5.30 PM, Zrinyi 14, Room 412

ABSTRACT
Although some people have recognized that Kant’s moral philosophy has
more in common with virtue ethics than is usually thought, it has not
been appreciated how close the two are and how much Kant owes to
Aristotle. Aristotle’s “practical wisdom” (phronésis) relates closely to
Kant’s “respect (Achtung) for the moral law”, and something like Kantian
freedom is needed to complete Aristotle’s account of “continence”
(enkrateia). Kant’s theory remains in no sense consequentialist, despite
some current suggestions, but it remains highly defensible.
