Lecturer in Philosophy, School of Philosophy and Art History RefREQ00099LocationColchesterJob CategoryAcademic Salary £38,896 - £46,414 per annum Closing date 25 July 2016 The School of Philosophy and Art History at the University of Essex is pleased to invite applications for a permanent Lectureship. We seek to appoint an outstanding philosopher with an interdisciplinary outlook. In addition to teaching and research in Philosophy, the postholder will contribute teaching and supervision to the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities. Area of Specialisation is open for this post, but conversance with Continental Philosophy is an essential requirement. In Philosophy, we would particularly welcome strengthening our teaching and supervision capacity in Ancient Philosophy, Logic, Philosophy of Language and Mind, and/or Contemporary French Philosophy. In Interdisciplinary Studies, we aim to build stronger links with departments in the Faculty of Science and Health; expertise and interest in Philosophy of Science (including Philosophy of Data Science, Philosophy of Medicine and/or Philosophy of Environmental Science ) would be desirabl! e. Essex Philosophy (http://www.essex.ac.uk/philosophy/) is part of the School of Philosophy and Art History in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Essex – a community of academics who share a common project of researching and teaching art and ideas. We are internationally recognized for our unique combination of Anglo-American and European Philosophy – particularly in Critical Theory, German Idealism (including Kant), and Phenomenology. We also have a long-standing research orientation in Moral and Political Philosophy, and research strengths in the Philosophy of Psychiatry and the Medical Humanities. We are committed to fostering a variety of philosophical approaches, and to developing links between philosophy and other disciplines (including the Human Rights Centre at Essex and various interdisciplinary initiatives on big data). We offer a wide range of courses for undergraduates, taught postgraduates, and doctoral research students. We were rated fifth for re! search outputs and ninth overall in Philosophy in the UK in the last Research Assessment Exercise (REF2014; using raw GPA figures from the Times Higher Education). The Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities (http://www.essex.ac.uk/cish/) is administered in the School, but other departments contribute to its degree courses, of which there are five: American (US) Studies, European Studies, Global Studies, Liberal Arts, and Latin American Studies. We consistently receive excellent results in National Student Satisfaction surveys – for example, American (US) Studies came first nationally in 2015 with an overall satisfaction score of 100%.
