*Abstract:*

Community Modelling Systems are collaborative frameworks aimed at helping
scientists to simulate complex phenomena, like climate evolution. In order
to understand how reliable knowledge is produced via these frameworks, I
shall focus on several examples of community modeling systems involving
different types of collaboration, from more centralized to more open ones,
and I shall examine in each case how knowledge is achieved. At first view,
it might seem that reliability is directly related with centralization;
however, as complex systems modeling is usually subject to the time
constraint, which demands the results to come at a quick pace, centralized
modes of collaboration may not be the most efficient ones.

Anouk Barberousse is Professor of Philosophy of Science at the Université
Paris-Sorbonne. She has published extensively on the history and philosophy
of physics and of biology. Her recent work focuses on the computational
turn in physics and the epistemology of computer-based models and
simulations.
