*Absztrakt:*

In this talk, I will explore how the predestinarian thinking of Saint Paul
and especially that of Jean Calvin has influenced to a significant degree
the way we think about success and failure today. Following in Max Weber's
footsteps, I will show not only that Calvin's theological distinction
between "the reprobate" and "the elect" has survived in our distinction
between the "losers" and the "victors" of the social-economic game, but
also that some of the same psychological mechanisms operate in both cases.
