Tilburg University, the Netherlands, has
established the new Tilburg Center for Logic and
Philosophy of Science, headed by Prof. Stephan
Hartmann, which will commence its work on 1 May
2007. The members of the Center work on a wide
variety of topics in logic and general philosophy
of science as well as on philosophical problems
of the special sciences, especially psychology
and economics, but also on the philosophy of
physics. Some are also interested in social
choice theory, formal methods in philosophy and
the logic of language and information. As part of
our plan to further expand our strengths in
philosophy of social science and philosophy of
economics we are currently looking for an
Assistant Professor in one of these fields. We
are also advertising several visiting fellowships
for advanced PhD students and visiting faculty, a
PhD position and two PhD studentships. For more

1. Assistant Professorship
The Department of Philosophy invites applications
for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position
starting on September 1, 2007. Candidates should
have their Ph.D. in hand or expect to receive it
by August 2007. AOS: Philosophy of economics,
philosophy of social science. AOC: open. The
successful candidate will be a member of the new
Tilburg Center for Logic and Philosophy of
Science. Candidates are requested to send a

2. Visiting Fellowships
The Tilburg Center for Logic and Philosophy of
Science invites applications for three- to
nine-months visiting fellowships in the academic
year 2007/2008 intended for advanced Ph.D.
students or faculty. Candidates should work in
one of the areas the Center covers and have a
commitment to interdisciplinary and collaborative
work. Candidates are requested to send a hardcopy

3. PhD Position
The Department of Philosophy and the Tilburg
Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science
(TiLPS) invite applications for a three, possibly
four-year PhD student position, commencing at the
latest September 1, 2007. The successful
candidate is expected to work on the foundations
or philosophy of mathematics or on social choice
theory. Candidates are invited to submit a CV, a
research proposal of maximally 5000 words, and a
transcript of courses taken (including grades).

4. R. Descartes Pre-Doctoral Fellowships
The newly established Center for Logic and
Philosophy of Science at Tilburg University,
headed by Prof. Stephan Hartmann, invites
applications for two fellowships commencing on
September 1, 2007. Candidates should have a
Masters degree (or equivalent) in philosophy,
work in one of the areas covered by the Center
and have a commitment to interdisciplinary and
collaborative work. We are especially interested
in students who want to work in one of the
following fields: Bayesian epistemology, general
philosophy of science, or the philosophy of a
special science (e.g. economics or psychology).
The fellowship includes a stipend of 750 Euro per
month for a period of three years, at the end of
which we expect the PhD-thesis to be completed.
Tuition fees are waived. Funds will also be
available for computer equipment and the
attendance of conferences. Applications
(including a curriculum vitae, certificates and
transcripts of courses taken, a project proposal
of 5000 words, and two letters of recommendation)
should be sent electronically to

The fellowship is named after the famous
mathematician and philosopher René Descartes, who
spent some of his most productive time in the
beautiful town of Breda, just twenty miles away
from Tilburg.
