Communities of Knowledge vs. Communities of Discourse:

The case of an intra-Maimonidean controversy in the 13th century

Abstract:

In the last generation, the study of controversies was acknowledged as
essential component in the history of science and philosophy, contributing
to our general understanding of the social/institutional theory of
knowledge. In my first talk, I will examine some of the major historical and
thematical aspects of such theory regarding western intellectual tradition,
from antiquity to the early modern period. In my second talk, I will
concentrate on one historic example: a controversy that took place in late
13th century Italy between two Jewish physicians debating on a series of
major philosophic and theological points.
