This talk aims to show how ethics as philosophical discipline figures in Origen’s interpretations of Psalms with special emphasis on the Homilies of Psalms rediscovered in 2012 and edited in 2015. While early Christian ethical teaching existed mainly in the form of series of faith-based ethical commands, Origen transmutes these prescriptions into a detailed and coherent but not systematic theory, which takes notice of the anthropological and psychological grounds of moral conduct. Origen adopts and transforms several elements of the “spiritual exercise” – the term of Pierre Hadot – practiced in contemporary philosophical schools.


Róbert Somos is a professor at Pécs University (Hungary), head of the Centre for Patristic Studies. He studied philosophy and history at the Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest (1977-1982). In 1987 doctor universitatis – philosophy (Eötvös Loránd University, Budapest), in 1995 candidature at Hungarian Academy of Science, in 2001 habilitation (University of Miskolc). In 2004 doctor of the Hungarian Academy. Fields of his research activities are Greek Patristics, later Greek philosophy, and the history of Hungarian philosophy in the first half of the twentieth century. He is the author of Logic and Argumentation in Origen. Adamantiana 7, Aschendorff Verlag, Münster 2015, and co-editor and contributor of Origeniana Nona.
